With Halloween approaching fast, there are many costume ideas on the internet and elsewhere that people can use. Since almost everybody has a hero or favored character from fiction or history, costume ideas for individuals are not too difficult to think up even without help. Sometimes, however, when going out in a group, it’s a fun idea to come up with costumes that work well with each other but still stand up on their own. Group Halloween costume ideas are much rarer, and it’s much more complicated to find them wherever you may look. Which group Halloween costume ideas you go for depends heavily on how much time and money you have to devote to them, as well as how many people you will have in your group. For smaller groups of six or fewer, a good idea is to consider TV families, especially from animated shows in which their clothes are well-known and don’t change week-to-week. For example, you could dress like the Griffin family from Family Guy, the Smith family from American Dad, or (for the more adventurous) the Simpsons. Another easily-identifiable group is the Addams family, and the individual pieces that make up their costumes can easily be found in vintage shops or, indeed, as parts of other costumes (parts of a witch costume for Morticia, for example). Other ideas include the Jetsons, the Scooby Doo gang, or bands like Kiss, Slipknot, GWAR or Mushroomhead.

For group Halloween costume ideas for bigger groups, the best thing to do is to go out dressed like characters that are usually seen in large groups in movies and on television. One classic example that is always a Halloween hit is a group of zombies. Given the wide variety of disparate ways to dress like a zombie, this allows your group all to look different to one another while still retaining a group identity – additionally, zombies are typically dressed in normal clothes that are simply ripped or torn, or splashed with fake blood. This makes for a very cheap and effective costume for each member of the group. Another idea is to go as a superhero collective such as the X-Men, or the Justice League. These superhero groups have many members and it’s easy to pick out individual costumes that will still be identifiable as a group. Other ideas include going as Romans or Greeks (with togas and wreaths), Scottish people (with kilts and claymores, as would have been seen in the film “Braveheart”) or Stormtroopers from Star Wars. You could even dress up as a sports team, with cheerleader costumes for the girls!
